Jeff awoke instantly to a buzzing noise and looked around for his gun.
Fuck. Heâd been so enrapt with Stacie all afternoon he hadnât even unpacked all his weapons. Had he lost his fucking mind? He was on a mission for Christ sake.
Stacie shifted beside him, and he knew exactly what had gotten into him. Or, more appropriately, heâd gotten into her. After awesome shower sex, he and Stacie had moved to the bed where she still lay asleep after round three.
Buzz. Buzz.
That was his cell phone, not the doorbell. Thank God.
Regrettably, he rolled away from Stacieâs warm body tucking the sheets around her so hopefully continued to sleep.
He grabbed the phone from his pocket and checked the caller ID. Nathan. His third call in an hour.
Damn.
He slid on his jeans and swiped the screen as he quietly closed the bedroom door.
âSorry, man. Whatâs up?â Jeff moved to the family room, the furthest point from the bedrooms. Remembering heâd turned off the audio and visual feed in that room, fearing he might not be the only one who needed to know whatever Nathan had to say, he laid his fingers onto the glass scanner and turned on security system.
âThank fuck you finally answered.â Nathan sighed. âI was about to call op center and find out where you were. Neither you nor Stacie answered your phones.â
âIâm here now. Are you okay? Is it Jul and the baby?â A million questions ran through Jeffâs brain.
âJul and the baby are fine. Weâre on our way to your house to pick you two up.â
Jeff checked his watch. He should have plenty of time. âI thought the meeting was set for seven-thirty.â
âChange of plans,â Nathan explained. âThey like to pull shit like this to keep us on our toes and confirm that we are committed to the cause. They want everyone there for Salat al-maghrib.â
Damn. They were expected for the prayer right after sunset. He looked out the windows at a sky turning orange. âI donât even know where my musallah is. I havenât unpacked.â Jeff started searching the house, wondering where the agency decorators would have stored a prayer rug. Or what it even looked like, given the modern way theyâd decked out the house.
âWhat have you been doing all day?â Nathan asked.
âNone of your damned business.â That was the only answer Jeff was going to give the man.
âIf you canât find your rug, I have a spare mat.â
âHow close are you?â Jeff checked a closet near the powder room and found several rolled rugs. âFound them.â He unfurled all the small rugs and chose the longest woolen rectangle to accommodate his six-foot height. Fortunately, it was hand-made with the blues found in many Iraqi villages. A perfect fit for his cover.
âWeâre about ten minutes away.â
âHanging up,â Jeff said.
He hurried to get dressed in the traditional white, loose-fitting pants and unadorned white shirt that fell to his knees, in case they took off their thawbs. He was supposed to be a tough truck driver for this op and figured worn black boots would be appropriate.
